Sustainability Goals
Building AI That Doesn't Cost the Earth
We believe technology should solve problems, not create new ones. Here's our honest assessment of where we are—and where we're going.
The Honest Truth
Where We Stand Today
Let's be transparent: AI has an environmental cost. Every query consumes electricity. Every model training run emits carbon. Every data center uses water for cooling.
As a startup utilizing cloud infrastructure and third-party APIs, we are part of that equation. We could hide behind vague promises or offset claims we haven't verified. But that's not who we are.
Here's what we know:
- We utilize the Anthropic Claude API, which runs on infrastructure we don't directly control
- Our application layer is hosted on cloud providers with varying energy mixes
- We are currently in the measurement phase—not yet offsetting
- Data centers require significant water for cooling, and we're still calculating our water footprint
Here's what we're doing about it:
- Building efficiency into our code from day one
- Tracking our usage to establish a real baseline
- Evaluating verified offset partners for future implementation
- Researching water-efficient hosting alternatives
We believe transparency is the first step toward accountability.
Understanding AI's Environmental Impact
The Hidden Cost of Intelligence
Artificial intelligence is often described as "cloud-based" or "virtual," but the infrastructure behind it is very real—and very energy-intensive.
Key Facts:
Statistic Context
5 cars' lifetime emissions - Equivalent to training one large language model
0.4 kWh per 1,000 queries - Estimated energy consumption for GPT-3 scale models
2% of global electricity - Projected AI industry consumption by 2030
<1% of AI companies Currently publish environmental impact reports
These numbers aren't meant to scare—they're meant to inform. We believe the first step toward solving a problem is acknowledging it exists.
The good news? Awareness is growing. Solutions are emerging. And companies like ours have an opportunity to build differently from the start.
Our Sustainability Roadmap
A Phased Approach to Responsibility
We're not claiming to be carbon-negative tomorrow. We're building a realistic, verifiable path toward environmental responsibility—one that matches our resources and growth stage.
Phase 1: Measurement & Growth (Current)
Timeline: Q1-Q2 2026
Status: In Progress
Goals:
- Implement usage tracking across all API calls
- Calculate baseline energy consumption per query
- Audit hosting provider energy mix
- Document infrastructure carbon intensity
- Establish quarterly reporting cadence
Why This Matters:
You can't improve what you don't measure. Before we can offset or reduce, we need to understand our actual footprint—not estimates, not guesses, but real data from our specific infrastructure.
Phase 2: Optimization
Timeline: Q3-Q4 2026
Status: Planning
Goals:
- Implement intelligent query routing (smaller models for simpler tasks)
- Optimize prompt engineering for token efficiency
- Evaluate migration to verified green hosting providers
- Implement caching strategies to reduce redundant API calls
- Reduce average query energy consumption by 25%
Why This Matters:
The cleanest energy is the energy you don't use. Efficiency improvements compound over time—every optimized query saves resources for the lifetime of the application.
Phase 3: Offsetting
Timeline: Q1-Q2 2027
Status: Research Phase
Goals:
- Partner with verified carbon offset providers (Gold Standard, Verra)
- Implement per-query carbon tracking visible to users
- Purchase offsets equivalent to 100% of measured emissions
- Publish annual sustainability report with third-party verification
- Achieve carbon-neutral operations certification
Why This Matters:
Offsetting isn't a perfect solution, but it's a necessary bridge. We will only partner with verified programs that provide additionality—meaning our contributions create real, measurable impact that wouldn't have happened otherwise.
Phase 4: Independence
Timeline: 2027-2028
Status: Long-Term Vision
Goals:
- Deploy fine-tuned models on our own infrastructure
- Select hosting locations based on renewable energy availability
- Implement real-time carbon-aware computing (shift workloads to greener times)
- Achieve carbon-negative operations (offset more than we emit)
- Open-source efficiency tools for the broader AI community
Why This Matters:
True sustainability requires control over your infrastructure. By building our own stack, we can make environmental considerations a first-class architectural decision—not an afterthought.
Our Principles
Guiding Values for Every Decision
Sustainability isn't a checkbox—it's a lens through which we evaluate every technical and business decision.
Principle 1: Measure Before You Act
We won't make claims we can't verify. Every sustainability statement on this page is tied to specific, measurable actions—not vague aspirations.
Principle 2: Efficiency First
The most sustainable infrastructure is the one you don't need to build. We prioritize lean code, smart caching, and intelligent routing before throwing more compute at problems.
Principle 3: Transparency Over Perfection
We'd rather be honest about our imperfections than pretend we've solved problems we haven't. Greenwashing helps no one—especially not the planet.
Principle 4: Progress Over Promises
Roadmaps are easy. Execution is hard. We commit to publishing regular updates on our progress—including setbacks and pivots—so you can hold us accountable.
Principle 5: Community Responsibility
We're not competing on sustainability. We'll share our learnings, tools, and best practices openly because climate change is a collective problem that requires collective action.
The Bigger Picture
AI as a Climate Solution
While we work to minimize our own footprint, we also believe AI can be a powerful tool for environmental good.
Potential Applications We're Exploring:
- Area How AI Can Help
- Energy Optimization Smart grid management, demand prediction, renewable integration
- Supply Chain Transparency Tracking emissions across complex global networks
- Climate Modeling More accurate predictions to inform policy and adaptation
- Waste Reduction Optimizing material flows, predicting demand to reduce overproduction
- Biodiversity Monitoring Analyzing ecosystem data to identify threats early
Our long-term vision isn't just to be a "less bad" AI company. It's to build tools that actively contribute to environmental solutions—where the positive impact of our technology far outweighs its footprint.
